Elon Musk has announced plans to form a video game studio within X’s (Twitter) AI division. What’s more, whatever issues you might have with games, AI will certainly not replace the many talented developers who are creating great art . (This is all assuming, of course, that the xAI game studio actually happens, which, given Musk’s many lies and failures , certainly isn’t a given.) But what’s especially funny about Musk wanting to step into game development is that he’s already been roasted multiple times for trying to act cool simply by playing games. In 2022, he boastfully shared an Elden Ring build that was objectively terrible , and more recently, he’s tried to proclaim himself as one of the best Diablo IV players in the world . That latter point is especially amusing — either he’s an even more irresponsible leader and parent than we thought and he’s neglecting his many businesses and children for a lot of classic Diablo grinding, or (more realistically) he got others to use his account and boost his rankings for him. Either way, it’s pretty pathetic, but that’s par for the course with Musk. And what started this whole conversation was another classic — and profoundly stupid — battle in the never-ending “culture war.” It started when Asmongold, a YouTuber best known for having a filthy room , cried about Avowed , the latest game from Xbox-owned Obsidian Entertainment, allowing you to choose your pronouns in the character creator. (The horror!) Naturally, this led to the likes of Mark “Grummz” Kern — a disgraced former game developer and failed instigator of ‘GamerGate 2’ — and Musk getting angry on social media about this completely innocuous feature. i find this tweet hilarious because in the screenshots they’re talking about how they will not buy avowed because it has pronouns. and suddenly when the art director responds with “ok fuck you then” they’re clutching their pearls. pic.twitter.com/z9UDVmOOnA — kate bush’s husband (@airbagged) November 27, 2024 In response, Matt Hansen, the art director on Avowed , posted on Bluesky that he was happy to have angered Musk over this. He went on to encourage more Black artists to apply to Obsidian and that they will “always” have his priority as there are “too many crusty old white dudes” in games. Naturally, this led grifter Ian Miles Cheong to make baseless claims that “Microsoft’s gaming division is excluding whites from being hired to work on their video games. Musk then shared Cheong’s ridiculous assertion and tagged Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, claiming “this is illegal.” Of course, even if you think Hansen’s comments were incendiary, the fact of the matter is all of these grifters are blatantly lying about Microsoft and Obsidian over those comments. It’s yet another example of Musk — a person with over 200 million followers — amplifying misinformation on his platform. And above all else, none of these clowns have even played Avowed . As someone who actually went to Obsidian recently to both play a few hours of the game and talk to several developers (including Hansen, who was delightful), I can tell you it’s a very promising fantasy action-RPG. But of course, those gosh-darned pronouns are so scary and dangerous to these grown men that they’ll write off an entire artistic work because of them. The confusion stemmed from the apps’ "connected experiences" toggles, which are on by default and power features like cloud fonts and downloadable document templates. Connected experiences were added to the suite well before the advent of generative AI , so it’s a bit unclear what sparked the controversy, although it might be attributable to a recent support document from Microsoft that explains which connected experiences "analyze your content." In response to a popular post on X that claimed the feature “scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems,” the official Microsoft 365 account replied “In the M365 apps, we do not use customer data to train LLMs. This setting only enables features requiring internet access like co-authoring a document.” While vigilance in protecting your data is always advisable, the company assures that analytical connected experiences in Microsoft 365 simply search the internet or consult Microsoft’s servers for help with your documents, with most working like an advanced spell check. Microsoft says in a different support document that “common examples [of these experiences] include translating text in a document, checking spelling in an email, or suggesting design changes to a presentation.” In other words, you need to give Microsoft permission to look at what you’ve typed if it’s going to transcribe it or check its grammar. According to the company, the feature is unrelated to training AI. In a statement to How-To Geek , a Microsoft spokesperson clarified further, calling connected experiences an “industry standard setting,” saying: Microsoft does not use customer data from Microsoft 365 consumer and commercial applications to train large language models. Additionally, the Connected Services setting has no connection to how Microsoft trains large language models. How to Opt Out of Connected Experiences in Microsoft Office If you would still rather Microsoft’s systems not be able to see what you’ve typed in Word or Excel, you’ll need to uncheck a few toggles. Navigate to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings . Here, you’ll see three Connected Experiences checkboxes. Uncheck whatever you don't want. Unchecking Experiences that analyze your content will keep Microsoft's systems from accessing your documents' content. Unchecking Experiences that download online content will keep Microsoft 365 from searching for content to download to your document, such as templates or images. Unchecking All connected experiences will turn off both of the above, as well as prevent online file storage. Outlook will continue to function as usual. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams faced fourth-and-5 at the Buffalo 35 with a 38-35 lead and just under four minutes to play Sunday in their high-octane showdown with the Bills. Sean McVay is often a conservative coach, and it would not have been surprising to see him try a long field goal, or even punt. He kept his offense on the field, and Matthew Stafford calmly went through his progression before finding Tutu Atwell across the middle for an 11-yard gain that played a major role in the Rams' ability to hold on for a season-altering, 44-42 victory over the powerhouse Bills . “We felt like we needed to make it a two-possession game,” McVay said Monday. “They were rolling. We talked about aggressively going to win that game. ... It was just a reflection of the confidence in that group and what we felt like we needed to do to be able to win the game.” The Rams offense has earned the confidence McVay showed in it at that crucial moment. That unit hasn't always been good this season, entering last weekend rated just 18th in the league, but the Rams finally are mostly healthy heading down the stretch — and Puka Nacua and Kyren Williams are again playing at last season's Pro Bowl level. That was bad news for Buffalo, and it could mean trouble for the rest of the NFC if the Rams (7-6) can keep scoring like this.
