He said he believes there are two categories of people shoplifting — those who do so out of desperation because they can’t afford the food, or organized criminals, profiting from sales on the black market. Mounties in North Vancouver made cheesy headlines when they ran into a man with a cart of stolen cheese in the middle of the night in September. The cheese, valued at $12,800, was from a nearby Whole Foods Store. While the cheese was recovered, it had to be disposed of because it hadn’t been refrigerated. Const. Mansoor Sahak, with the North Vancouver RCMP, said officers believe cheese is targeted because it’s “profitable to resell.” “If they are drug addicts, they will commit further crimes with that or feed their drug habits. It’s a vicious cycle,” said Sahak. Sahak said meat is also a top target for grocery thieves, with store losses sometimes in the thousands. “So, we’re not surprised that this happened,” said Sahak. Police in Ontario have been chasing down slippery shoplifters going after butter. Scott Tracey, a spokesman with Guelph Police Service, said there have been eight or nine butter thefts over the last year, including one theft last December worth $1,000. In October, two men walked into a local grocer and filled their carts with cases of butter valued at $936, and four days later a Guelph grocer lost four cases valued at $958. Tracey said he has looked at online marketplaces and found listings by people selling 20 or 30 pounds of butter at a time. “Clearly, somebody didn’t accidentally buy 30 extra pounds of butter. So, they must have come from somewhere,” said Tracey, “I think at this point it appears to be the black market is where it’s headed.” He said the thefts seem to be organized, with two or three people working together in each case. Police in Brantford, Ont., are also investigating the theft of about $1,200 worth of butter from a store on Nov. 4. Charlebois said retailers could invest in prevention technologies like electronic tags, but putting them on butter or cheese is rare. He said up until recently grocery store theft has been a “taboo subject for many years.” Stores didn’t wanted to talk about thefts because they didn’t want to alarm people but now they feel they need to build awareness about what is “becoming a huge problem,” said Charlebois. These growing concerns over child safety are part of why Roblox has been rolling out a series of updates with new protections for its youngest and most vulnerable users, including age gates, screen time limits and new parental controls. Roblox first announced it was rolling out a set of parental controls in October, and now, parents will be able to manage their kids' accounts from their own devices and accounts. Within these controls, parents can set daily screen time limits and view their kids' friends list. Parents will need to link their Roblox account with their kids' account. New content labels, based on content and not age, will help parents understand the different elements — violence, crude language and so on — in different games or experiences. Players under 9 years old will be automatically limited to games that have minimal or mild levels of these elements, but parents will also be able to manually select what label their kids are able to see and play. Nov. 3, 1957-May 2, 2024 Former Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs died unexpectedly in the spring. At age 66, Burroughs left his mark as a father, grandfather, attorney and public servant. Burroughs was the second of seven children who excelled in school, in debate and math clubs as well as a French horn player at Klein High School. He went to Stephen F. Austin State University and finished in three years, getting degrees in history, business and political science. He earned his law degree at the University of Texas School of Law and practiced in Houston and Fort Worth before opening a practice with Gregory J. Sawko in Denton. Burroughs served three terms on the Denton City Council as an at-large member. He worked on regional agency boards and committees in North Texas and worked with local and regional transportation and clean air groups. He kept a busy civic calendar as well, lending his time and talent to the arts and public broadcasting. He served as the mayor of Denton from 2008 to 2014, applying his knowledge and experience to local growth and city leadership. "Big" Mike Sutton could seem gruff, but locals remember him as a Fry Street business owner whose heart was as big as his personality. Sutton died in Missouri, where he had retired, the day after his 70th birthday. Sutton was best known for his business Voyager’s Dream on Hickory Street near UNT, selling crystals, hand drums, new age music and all sorts of trinkets meant to make you feel centered. He was also a dedicated pacifist who turned his car into a “deathmobile,” writing the names, ages and hometowns of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. He ran several times for the Denton City Council from 2008 to 2011, filing for a recount in his last bid after losing the District 3 race by 29 votes. Sutton turned Voyager's Dream into Big Mike’s Coffee in 2009 before selling it to a new owner and retiring. As Aura Coffee, it still serves as a hub for the community. April 29, 1945-June 13, 2024 Attorney Mike Gregory shared his experience and skills as a public servant as a lawyer, a seminar leader and eventually as an adjunct professor at Texas Woman's University and UNT as an undergraduate law lecturer. Mike Gregory Gregory, a graduate of the University of Texas and its School of Law, began his law practice in 1974. He was a board-certified family law specialist and a certified mediator. He lent his time to the local and state bar association, serving as president of the Denton County Bar, president of the Denton County Collaborative Professionals, president of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists and director of the State Bar of Texas. He was named Denton County Bar Association Member of the Year in 2014-15. In 2018, he was appointed by the Texas Supreme Court as a member of the Board of Disciplinary Appeals. He was a devoted volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. Sept. 19, 1937-July 17, 2024 UNT Athletics Hall of Fame member Abner Haynes’ legacy on the football field is considerable, but the role he and Leon King played in the integration of the South might be even more impactful. Haynes, who died at the age of 86 in Dallas, and King were the first Black players to integrate a football program at a four-year Texas school. Haynes was a two-time all-Missouri Valley Conference running back, led North Texas to an appearance in the 1959 Sun Bowl and was named an All-American by Time magazine that season. He went on to play for the Dallas Texans, who later became the Kansas City Chiefs. He led the American Football League in rushing in 1960 and was its first Player of the Year. While Martin was still a student at Dallas' Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, he began working with gospel choir director Kirk Franklin and later became his music director. As a music major in college, Martin worked with Erykah Badu on her second album, Mama’s Gun . It was also at UNT where he joined a group of student musicians to create Snarky Puppy, a jazz fusion band that went on to win five Grammy Awards. Martin himself has won seven Grammys: three as a Snarky Puppy member and four for his work with Franklin. Dec. 31, 1950-Aug. 11, 2024 Herschel Voorhees was a Denton High School alumna and a UNT graduate who spent 40 years in medicine. The bulk of his career was spent serving as the chief of staff and executive director of the UNT Health and Wellness Center, where students could get primary health care on campus. Voorhees was an outdoorsman and an outspoken advocate for students and for medicine. He applied his curiosity to medicine and the many trails and parks he hiked. Fort Worth musician Daron Beck, formerly of Denton, died in August at the age of 48. He’s shown posing for a portrait in Dallas in 2020. June 19, 1976-Aug. 22, 2024 Daron Beck, best known as the vocalist and keyboardist of experimental sci-fi synth-doom duo Pinkish Black, died after an illness at his home in the Fort Worth area. Beck previously lived in Denton, where his bands in the ’90s and early 2000s included Pointy Shoe Factory, Maxine’s Radiator and Thorazine Dreams. In 2005, he appeared in an episode of American Idol , making an impression on the judges with his audition although he didn’t advance in the competition. “I knew they were going to play me up as some kind of weirdo freak, but I’d rather be that than American Idol anyway,” he told the Denton Record-Chronicle at the time. May 6, 1975-Oct. 8, 2024 Ryan High School defensive coordinator Aaron De La Torre, shown in a 2019 photograph. Aaron De La Torre, a college athlete who turned pro, then went into high school coaching, died suddenly on Oct. 8. He grew up in Irving and played football at Stephen F. Austin State University and then played with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys and in NFL Europe before retiring from playing professionally. De La Torre settled in Denton as Ryan High School's assistant football coach. He was in his seventh season when he died. He coached with his son, Alex, for two years, including the the program’s journey to the 2019 state championship game, in which his youngest son, Kolt, was a player. While his leadership on the field is missed, the mentorship De La Torre gave to students is a bigger loss, friends and family said. Oct. 8, 1932-Dec. 11, 2024 Retired journalist, editor, teacher and author Keith Shelton died this month after a short time in hospice care. Shelton cut his teeth on the country's biggest modern stories. Keith Shelton He began as a city hall reporter for the Wichita Falls Record-News and then the Dallas Times-Herald . In Dallas, Keith covered the assassination of John F. Kennedy, as well as the careers of four other presidents. He also covered the tenure of Gov. John Connally. He served on the Texas Supreme Court Task Force on Judicial Ethics, became president of the Dallas Press Club and served as secretary of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, later becoming its director. He was named the editor of the Denton Record-Chronicle in 1965. He later served as managing editor and then executive editor of the Record-Chronicle, the Lewisville News and the Grapevine Sun . His work with Denton Publishing Co. spanned 35 years. Shelton launched a 23-year tenure as a member of journalism faculty at UNT. He earned his master's degree in journalism, taught three future Pulitzer Prize winners and became the first faculty adviser to the student newspaper. He transitioned to director of news and information services and journalist in residence in the 1990s and early 2000s, as he became the sole caregiver of his late wife, a polio survivor. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday previewed next week's important Wall Street action, suggesting it's wise to pay attention to a slew of retail earnings as well as reports from Dell and CrowdStrike . He also said that the coming week is typically a good one for the market and advised investors to ring the register on some of their more volatile stocks that have seen significant gains. "I would show a little thanks next week and take something off the table in your most risky positions." Monday brings quarterly reports from Bath & Body Works and Zoom . Cramer noted that the soap maker's stock hasn't been popular on Wall Street as of late, but wondered if positive commentary about the holiday season from management would make a difference. He also pointed to the tension between those who are shorting stock of Zoom and those intending to buy and said it seems the company always "has a lot of irons in the fire." Tuesday is a big day for retailers, with reports from Best Buy , Abercrombie & Fitch , Kohl's , Macy's , Burlington Stores and Dick's Sporting Goods . Cramer noted that many of these stocks have run up heading into earnings — so it's "treacherous" to buy now — and wondered which ones will impress Wall Street. He added that some retailers whose earnings weren't great still saw their stocks soar but others got badly dinged , like Target . J.M. Smucker will also post earnings that day. Cramer said some investors weren't pleased with the snack food company's pricey Hostess acquisition , but he suggested the stock could climb if results are in-line. A few major tech names also report Tuesday, including CrowdStrike , Dell , and Workday . Cramer said he's positive on all three, noting that Dell is a major Nvidia partner that is helping implement its newest technology. He said investors might want to buy some Dell stock now and some after earnings if it pulls back. HP will report after close, and Cramer said he wants to know if new artificial intelligence-enabled PCs are seeing success. While stock action tends to slow during the rest of the holiday week, Cramer pointed out that on Wednesday the government will release the latest personal consumption expenditures index. This data is an inflation metric for the Federal Reserve and could indicate whether there will be another interest rate cut before the end of the year. There are times when a postseason bowl seems like the first game of next year for the participating teams. That cliche means something a little different for NC State and East Carolina. The Wolfpack and Pirates face each other in the Military Bowl on Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland. Then they’ll see each other again in about eight months. NC State opens the 2025 season at home against ECU on Aug. 30. There is certainly plenty of familiarity between these two programs, even though NC State (6-6) is in the ACC and East Carolina (7-5) is in the AAC. The teams — located about 80 miles apart — have met 32 times, most recently in 2022 when the Wolfpack won 21-20. From 1970-87, these teams played each other every year. Since 2004, they haven’t gone more than two consecutive seasons without meeting. “Hour and a half down the road and you’re playing — whether you play every year or don’t play every year — I think it’s still a rivalry,” East Carolina coach Blake Harrell said. “Our fans still get excited. They still think that’s a rivalry. Our players still think that’s a rivalry.” NC State leads the series 19-13 and has won three straight — but East Carolina won three in a row before that. “It’s weird playing a team that we open with next year,” Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren said. “We don’t play them that much. We play them every three years, so it’s really a roster turnover. Every time we see them, it’s a different ballclub for the most part. But yeah, finishing with who you open with is unique.” Postseason history NC State and East Carolina met in the Peach Bowl in 1992 — during an eight-year hiatus in their regular-season series. He sat for a five-hour interview and answered every question the NCAA asked. He also produced every document the NCAA requested,” lawyer Jason Bologna said in a statement. “Hysier did these things because he wanted to play basketball this season, and he is devastated that he cannot.” Miller, a three-year starter from South Philadelphia, transferred to Virginia Tech this spring. Sambhal : The Sambhal district administration has written to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for carbon dating of the Bhasma Shankar temple, including a well there, officials said on Sunday, December 15, days after the reopening of the temple locked since 1978 following communal riots in the town. Worshippers have started visiting the temple and it is being guarded round the clock, they said. “This is the temple of Kartik Mahadev. A well has been found here. This is Amrit Koop. Security guards have been permanently posted here and CCTV cameras have also been installed. Puja has also started in the temple. There is encroachment here, which is being removed,” District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya said. “We have written a letter to ASI for carbon dating of the temple and the well,” he added. Carbon dating is a method used to determine the age of archaeological artefacts from ancient sites. Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar said that all roads leading to the temple have been covered with CCTV cameras and a control room is also being set up there. “There will be round-the-clock security in the temple and permanent police deployment is being ensured,” the SP said. Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel have been posted at the site. The Bhasma Shankar temple was reopened on Friday after authorities said that they stumbled upon the covered structure during an anti-encroachment drive. Referring to the reopening of the temple, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said it did not appear overnight and represents “our enduring heritage and the truth of our history”. Mahant Acharya Vinod Shukla, the temple priest, said worshippers have begun visiting and offering prayers. Local resident Mohit Rastogi expressed gratitude over the temple’s reopening. “I had heard about this temple from my grandfather,” he said, after offering water to the Shivling and reciting prayers. “I thank the district administration for allowing us to reconnect with our heritage,” he added. The temple is situated in the Khaggu Sarai area which is just over a kilometre away from the Jama Masjid where violence had taken place on November 24 during a protest against a court-ordered survey of a mosque. The temple houses an idol of Lord Hanuman and a Shivling. It had remained locked since 1978 after the communal riots led to the displacement of the local Hindu community, locals claimed. The temple also has a well nearby which the authorities plan to reopen. Some residents on Saturday shared their memories of the temple, with many highlighting its importance for the community. Vishnu Shankar Rastogi, the 82-year-old patron of the Nagar Hindu Mahasabha, said, “I have lived in Khaggu Sarai since my birth. After the 1978 riots, our community was forced to migrate from the area.
